SANDWICH – Sandwich officials have announced that the town is looking into acquiring a former Santander Bank building for use as municipal office space.
Selectmen have indicated that that they hope to relocate offices now housed at Town Hall, the Town Hall Annex, and a Jan Sebastian Drive facility into the now vacant bank property located at the corner of Route 6A and Tupper Road.
“A central facility will provide new opportunities for residents the Town of Sandwich,” said David Sampson, Chairman of Sandwich’s Board of Selectmen, “Including an improved service experience and centralized offices that do not require residents to travel across town to complete business with town departments.”
Discussions of creating a single consolidated municipal office building have been in the works for more than three decades.
It is unclear how much the purchase may end up costing taxpayers as approval of the deal could allow the town to sell the Town Hall Annex as well as the Jan Sebastian Drive building, defraying some costs.
The town may have some competition as they work to secure the former bank building, Sandwich’s Council on Aging has already announced their interest in acquiring the property for use as a new senior center.
