Sandwich Proposes Roadway Improvements to Rt. 6A/Merchants Square

SANDWICH- After two pedestrians were killed at the intersection of Route 6A and Merchant’s Square in Sandwich last year, a call for added road safety in that area has been made.

“We sent the state a letter on behalf of the selectmen last summer just asking them to take a closer look at the intersection. [After that request]… the state met with us in the late fall, and then did some analysis [on the said stretch of roadway] over the winter,” says Bud Dunham, Sandwich Town Manager.

In a recent report, the results of the survey showed that not all pedestrians using the crosswalk on 6-A actually pressed the crossing button while waiting for the light to change, thus leading to some trying to cheat the cars and running into the road.

The study also found that the intense slope of the roadway before and after the traffic lights caused a visual impairment to the light cycle.

Possible solutions to these problems could include; “Something as simple as changing the inner workings of the signal operations, to allow a little more times for cars to pass through the intersection and then… better signage… and a blinking pedestrian sign,” says Dunham.

“The nice part is [that] the vast majority of the things that we’ve mentioned really don’t cost any real amounts of money… [as they would only include just]… a couple days’ worth of labor,” he added.

No word yet on if or when these proposed changes would be made.
