School Committee Approves New Contract for Monomoy Teachers

HARWICH – Teachers in the Monomoy Regional School District have reached a deal on a ratified contract.

The agreement came in a unanimous vote by the school committee at a February 12 meeting to be retroactively put into effect on July 1, 2018 with an expiration date of June 30, 2021.

“On the behalf of the school committee and the negations sub-committee, we would like the teachers for their time and the commitment that they put into the negotiations process,” said School Committee and Bargaining Committee Member Nancy Scott.

“While it took a great deal of time, we reached an agreement I think we all can be really proud of as a committee, as teachers, and as townspeople.”

The ratified contract calls for a two-percent increase in salaries and stipends in each of the next three years, adjustments to benefits and work hours, and will also return the Jawsome Hour at Monomoy Regional High School.

Teachers will also see an expansion of their healthcare options.

Lump sum longevity payments dependent on years of service will be paid out to teachers with 16-20 years in the district receiving $800, 21-25 years receiving $1,000, and 26-30 years receiving $1,600.

As for work hours, the new contract states that across the district, teacher’s workdays will not exceed six hours and 55 minutes. It also states that the work day will not begin before 7:30 a.m. or after 8:45 p.m.

“I think that even though it was difficult and challenging through these months, I think it was a worthwhile sit down to try to reach a point to say, ‘all of us are doing the best we can,’” School Committee Member Terry Russell added.

The negotiated contract expires following the 2020-2021 school year.
