BARNSTABLE – Scientists from the Silent Spring Institute will discuss new research on chemicals of concern in drinking water at Barnstable Town Hall today.
Researchers recently found highly fluorinated chemicals in over half of the private drinking water wells tested on Cape Cod.
Elevated levels of the chemicals, also known as PFASs, were also found in several Hyannis municipal wells prompting the town to install new drinking water treatment systems in recent months.
The PFASs were found to originate from foams used by firefighters to extinguish gas and oil fires.
PFASs were also found in household wastewater, which can carry the harmful chemicals into groundwater as well as drinking water.
Institute scientists will discuss their research further and solutions to the issues this afternoon from noon to 1:30 p.m.
