HYANNIS – Representatives with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation are assuring Cape residents that they will no longer go forward with their plans to renumber the exit signs on Route 6.
The project was proposed in February as part of a larger, national renumbering initiative for state highways that is directed by the Federal Highway Administration.
New exit numbers would have corresponded with mileage instead of a number sequence.
“We think that’s $5 million that can well spent in other places,” said Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Wendy Northcross. “There’s only one Cape Cod in the whole world and it’s pretty unique, we don’t think we need quite such a large sign.”
MassDOT had also proposed replacing exit signs from exit 2 through 12 with larger overhead, full-span signs, but those plans have also changed.
“We are going to replace the signs to make sure that they are properly reflective, but they’re going to be installed back into the original posts and at this time there are no plans to renumber the exits,” said MassDOT legislative liaison Jim Kersten.
