HYANNIS – The State Fire Marshall is reminding the public to properly dispose of their Christmas trees soon.
Peter Ostroskey says that a dried out tree will ignite quickly and spread a fire very fast, so everyone with a natural tree is asked to take down their trees promptly and dispose of them properly.
Across Massachusetts in recent years, there have been several fires involving Christmas Trees that lingered too long in homes.
A fire in a condominium in Lunenburg in January 2012 caused around $27,000 worth of damage and a blaze in January 2014 in Walpole had up to $50,000 in damage to the home after a Christmas tree lit up.
Ostroskey also adds that discarded Christmas trees can provide easy fuel for arsonists and is frequently attractive to vandals.
The State Fire Marshall is asking that residents take advantage of community pick-up days or recycling programs.
