Turtles Rescued on Cape Cod Flown to Florida for Treatment

QUINCY – A group of endangered sea turtles saved from beaches on Cape Cod have finally made it back to warmer waters.

46 sea turtles were flown by volunteer pilots to Florida, where they will be rehabilitated at local facilities before they are eventually released back into the wild.

The animals ended up washed up and cold-stunned on Cape Cod beaches in recent weeks. Volunteers from Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary rescued the turtles before they were transported to the New England Aquarium’s Animal Care Center in Quincy.

More than 260 alive sea turtles have washed up in Massachusetts so far this season.

The animals will be treated in Florida to make room for more turtles at the New England Aquarium’s Quincy facility.
