BOSTON – The Division of Marine Fisheries is opening shellfishing areas in several towns on the Upper and Mid Cape which were closed Friday.

The emergency closures were the result of extreme rainfall, which totaled over 4 inches in some areas, Friday afternoon.

DMF says the areas now meet the National Shellfish Sanitation Program guidelines and will open for harvesting shellfish for human consumption beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Shellfish harvesting areas were closed in Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth, Mashpee, Barnstable and Lewis Bay in Yarmouth.

Two areas in Falmouth, SC:5 and SC:8, remain closed to shellfishing due to a fuel spill incident in Falmouth Harbor Tuesday.
