Vineyard Wind to Hold Hyannis Open House Today

HYANNIS – Vineyard Wind will hold the   third in a series of community meetings tonight in Hyannis to discuss plans to build a wind farm 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.

Company officials have said the project would generate enough electricity to power 400,000 homes.

The open house will take place at the Cape Codder Resort from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Vineyard Wind submitted its proposal late last year to the state to construct an 800 megawatt wind farm with a proposed construction start date in 2019.

The proposed farm would generate enough electricity to power over 400,000 homes. The company would need to bring undersea power lines from the turbines ashore in either Yarmouth or Barnstable.

Prior to filing the proposal to the state, Vineyard Wind was the first of several competing projects to apply for federal and state construction permits.

By filing for construction permits, the project is on track to complete the permitting process in time to start construction in 2019.

“Today marks a historic day for the future offshore renewable energy industry in Massachusetts and Vineyard Wind is the one project poised to quickly deliver clean wind power resources to cities and towns across the state, said Laura Beane last month.

Bean is the CEO of Avangrid Renewables, which is a co-owner of the Vineyard Wind project.

“With this large-scale offshore project, we look forward to pouring valuable economic development dollars into multiple sectors of the Massachusetts economy and putting people to work immediately.”
