WEST YARMOUTH – The Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth surpassed its daily attendance record earlier this week by more than 200 people.
Over 1,450 visitors walked through the attraction Monday, breaking the previous record set a few weeks ago.
The museum, which opened in June of 2016, features the only authenticated pirate treasure ever discovered.
The Whydah sank off Wellfleet in 1717.
The museum also features artifacts removed from the wreck site, stories of the crew and highlights of what life was like on the ship.
“Lines were out the door. It was pretty special to see the excitement on people’s faces as they waited to enter the exhibit,” said Barry Clifford, explorer and founder of the museum. “The museum was packed the minute we opened. By 10 a.m., we knew it was going to be a huge day for us.”
The museum continues to add new artifacts to the exhibit daily and visitors can watch as conservators unearth pistols, coins and gold that continues to be removed from the wreckage.
