YARMOUTH – Yarmouth selectmen are skeptical about plans to improve Bass Hole Beach as much of the location is being lost to erosion and salt marsh.
Selectmen discussed the plans during their meeting this week, with several town departments wanting to see a raised viewing platform, refurbished restrooms, outdoor showers and 48 new parking spaces.
“This is a very important area, as many of our local parks are,” said Parks and Recreation Director Patricia Armstrong. “In our community there’s a lot of emotional attachment to the Bass Hole.”
There is no funding yet for the projects and permitting could be an issue, but selectmen are concerned that it’s not worth the money to spend on amenities if they’re unsure how long the beach will be there.
“To me, losing a major resource for this community is unconscionable and we need to find ways to get back what we’ve lost already and to enhance the usability of the beach area in particular,” said Selectman Norman Holcomb.
Currently 50 feet of the beach remains.
Selectmen agreed that some improvements to the site could be made and would be appreciated by residents.
Town staff will conduct some preliminary investigation into relevant permitting.
