FALMOUTH – In a battle of two unbeaten teams, it usually helps to know what one might expect.
But Falmouth High School girls ice hockey head coach Erin Hunt wasn’t sure what to expect when a very tough LaSalle Academy team traveled to the Cape last night. The fact of the matter was that neither had ever played each other before and the LaSalle Rams hail from Providence, Rhode Island. As of the opening face-off, both teams were undefeated at 2-0 on the still young season.
Still unbeaten at 3-0 on the season with a true shot at a state title this year, the Falmouth Clipper girls ice hockey team welcomes a tough Hingham squad to town on Saturday afternoon.

But not at the final buzzer.
When the dust finally settled on this non-league affair, the Falmouth Clippers had readily dispatched the visitors, 7-2, and Coach Hunt couldn’t have stated her pleasure in that result in any simpler terms.
“we’re very happy with the win,” she said. “It was a great game but I had no idea what to expect coming in. We’ve never faced them before.”
What Coach Hunt and the Clippers may have least expected was being deadlocked at an even 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 with just over half the third period remaining to play.
Falmouth asst. captain Kelly Ferreira – who scored two goals on the night – scored what would prove to be the eventual game-winning goal when she fired it past the LaSalle netminder to make it 3-2 in the third and from the point forward “it was just one after another,” Coach Hunt said.
Falmouth sophomore forward Ericka Meissner scored the Clippers’ fourth goal, followed in succession by goals from sophomore defenseman Brooke Bowman, junior defenseman Hannah Callahan, and lastly, Rachael Curtis, a freshman forward.
Ferreira scored the first goal of the game in the first period to make it 1-0, LaSalle quickly retaliated when Michaela McNamara beat the Clipper goalie to the punch to make it 1-1. Falmouth’s Maggie MacDonald – a senior forward – made it 2-1 just 33 seconds into the third period. Ten seconds later, LaSalle’s Jamie Comeau tied it up at 2-2 and then Ferreira provided her usual magic for the game-winner.
The Clippers will face a solid challenge come Saturday afternoon at home, though, when the Hingham Harbormen come to town.
“They’re a good match-up for us,” Coach Hunt said. “They’re a strong team and they are very well-coached.”
