Falmouth Clipper Girls Dispatch Winchester, Advance to State Semifinals

BOURNE – When the deluge came, it came, as it often does, in quick succession.

First, it was senior assistant captain Kelly Ferreira.

Then came, as might have been guessed, freshman phenom Mackenzie Haberl.

In usual fashion, senior stalwart and McKenzie’s older sister Madison Haberl uncorked a beauty that was tipped by Brooke Bowman into the net.

Wouldn’t you know, McKenzie Haberl then threw some more fuel on the fire and after her, Rachael Curtis and Olivia Hough.

With six goals in a row, the #8-seeded Falmouth High School girls’ hockey team defeated #16-seed Winchester High Saturday afternoon at the Gallo Ice Arena, 6-1, in the MIAA Division 2 Girls’ Ice Hockey State Quarterfinals and in so doing ended the Sachems’ season.

After a pair of tournament victories, with the loss, Winchester finishes the season at 13-6-3.

“We had a game plan coming in and we had a week of practice and it all came together,” Falmouth head coach Erin Hunt said. “The girls were very focused in practice all week… we were excited to play tonight.”

With its third straight postseason win, Falmouth (18-4-2) advances to Monday night’s Division 2 State semifinal against 12th-seeded Burlington High School (17-5-1) at the Gallo Ice Arena at 6:00 pm.

Falmouth’s scoring onslaught got under way just over five minutes into the game and it came at a time when the Clippers were at a disadvantage. With junior defenseman Hannah Callahan in the penalty box and down one player, Falmouth scored a shorthanded goal at 9:38. Ferreira wheeled down the right wing and used her momentum to get past a pair of Winchester defenders – both clinging to her — and flipped it past goalie Vicki Wallace to make it 1-0.

Two minutes later, a relentless McKenzie Haberl made it 2-0.

With three Winchester players all in and around their goalie Wallace’s crease, no could seem to decide who was going to clear the puck. No other player on either team was anywhere close.

Except for Haberl.

Haberl raced back toward the goal from the blue line and simply rammed the loose puck in the net (7:54). The Clippers took that 2-0 lead into the locker room at the end of the frame.

Just 0:50 seconds into the second period, senior Madison Haberl unloaded a vicious, wide-open slap shot that somehow got tipped by sophomore defenseman Brooke Bowman and right past Wallace to make it 3-0.

The second period ended 14 minutes later at just that, 3-0.

At 12:33 of the third period, Falmouth came out in full attack mode as McKenzie Haberl scored her second goal to make it 4-0, assisted by Emily Sanidas and Shannon Upton.

At 9:25, Falmouth freshman forward Rachael Curtis slammed in a rebound off of a Madison Haberl shot and 1:25 after that it was 6-0 on a nifty goal by senior forward Olivia Hough.

With just 3:35 left, Winchester’s Julianna Bray scored to ruin senior goalie Madison Scavotto’s shutout bid, but that was all the Sachems would get.
