BOURNE – There’s something to be said for being the only team on Cape Cod still alive this postseason.
After a week of upsets, replete with, as the late Jim McKay once said, “The agony of defeat,” the Falmouth High School girls’ ice hockey team is the last team in any sport still competing for a state title.
Now at 17-4-2 on the season, the #8th-seeded Clipper girls will be at the John Gallo Ice Arena this afternoon (Saturday, March 7, 2015) at 3:00 pm to face the 16th-seeded Winchester High Sachems who now stand at 13-5-3. Both teams will be battling to advance beyond today’s Division 2 Quarterfinals to face 12th-seeded Burlington High on Monday night at 6:00 pm at Gallo in the Division 2 Semifinals.
Falmouth staged a late-season upset of the top-ranked Barnstable High Red Raiders and snatched away their archrivals’ undefeated season and league title hopes in one fell swoop. Crowned the 2014-15 SEMGHL Coastal Division Champions, the Falmouth Clippers have been a model of efficiency and teamwork, bolstered by a truly gifted group of underclassmen like freshman McKenzie Haberl, sophomores Ericka Meissner and Brooke Bowman.
Led by senior captain and goaltender extraordinaire Madison Scavotto and assistant captain Kelly Ferreira, the Clippers have depth, speed and scoring ability. Out of the top 15 female scorers on the Cape this winter, Falmouth stands apart with six. Mackenzie Haberl leads all Clipper point-scorers with 28 points, while her older sister Madison Haberl follows close behind with 23 points.
