Mass. Maritime Softball Woes Continue in MCLA Sweep

WILLIAMSTOWN — Junior Sierra Bailey (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) drove in four runs, while senior Amanda Meczywor (Adams, Mass.) went the distance to earn a pair of wins inside the circle as MCLA swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon by scores of 8-0 in the opener and 7-0 in the nightcap in games played at Williams College’s Cole Field.

Bailey’s three-run homer (her first of the spring) highlighted a six-run outburst by the host Trailblazers (9-15, 6-2 MASCAC) in their first at-bat of the opener, as the hosts used a second inning sacrifice fly and third inning groundout to close out the scoring. Juniors Michaela DiNicola (Lanesboro, Mass.) and Abigail Lucas (Braintree, Mass.) each rapped out two of MCLA’s nine hits in the lid-lifter, as Meczywor scattered two hits and fanned seven to earn her third victory of the season. Sophomore Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.) and freshman Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich, R.I.) each rapped out doubles in the opening setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-10, 0-10 MASCAC), as freshman Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) went the distance inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime while recording a pair of strikeouts.

MCLA used a four-run second inning rally to plate all the runs it would need in the nightcap, as freshman Julie Watson’s (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) two-run single was followed by a pair of errors that allowed two more tallies in the frame. The Trailblazers iced their triumph with three sixth inning runs, two of which came on Bailey’s double and an RBI single by Meczywor, who allowed 10 hits and struck out five for her second win of the day and fourth of the spring. Junior Jennifer Sicinski (Shelton, Conn.) collected three of the hosts’ 13 hits in the nightcap, while Lucas and junior Angela Perfido (Whately, Mass.) added two hits each in the second contest.

Junior Brittany Driscoll (Spencer, Mass.) rapped out three of the Buccaneers’ 10 hits in the nightcap, while Thomas added a pair of singles for the visitors while going the distance on the mound and striking out four. Jendzejec and Nice also singled for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received hits from senior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) as well as freshmen Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and Haley Delahanty (Holden, Mass.).

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at Noon, while MCLA heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Monday afternoon to square off with Bridgewater State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at 1:00 p.m.
