Monomoy Relentless with Bats, Stage Rout over Storm

COTUIT – In a ballgame that featured six different pitchers and a combined 32 hits, it was the unyielding Monomoy Sharks who rose victoriously when the dust finally settled at Lowell Park last night in an 18-9 rout over the Sturgis East Storm (7-7).

Ahead 8-0 after the first inning, the visiting Sharks (8-5) tacked on one more in the third and another five runs in the fifth for a 14-0 lead before Sturgis East finally mustered up a rally for five runs of its own.

Monomoy righty Dalton Nickerson picked up the win with a 5 1/3 innings of work, striking out three and allowing five earned runs. Kyle Coolidge took the loss for the Sturgis East squad.

Four Sturgis East players rapped out multiple hits on the afternoon, with shortstop Ryan Havey leading the way with a 4-5 day at the plate, followed by Jared Joy who went 2-4 including a two-run double, Mark Agostinelli (3-4) and Joey Colesano (3-4, 2 runs, 2 doubles).

Five Monomoy hitters finished the game with multiple hits, highlighted by catcher Noah Nickerson who went 2-3 and belted a three-run shot over the left-centerfield wall in the Sharks’ five-run fifth. Nickerson, who also doubled (and advanced to third on an error) was joined by Drew Senatore (3-6, triple), Jimmy Hinesley (3-6), Dalton Nickerson (3-5, double) and Christ Amezquita (2-4, double).

Down 14-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, The Storm staged another rally and plated four runs to narrow the deficit to 14-9 as the hosts capitalized on a pair of miscues and with two outs gave it all they had, highlighted by a Colesano two-run double.

But the Sharks mixed two hit batsmen and three singles in the top of the seventh to plate three insurance runs to end the threat.
