Tate walked, singled, tripled and belted a two-run homer in a five-run fourth inning that spelled the difference in this softball slugfest, while Doyle hit a trio of singles and a triple in the fourth frame.

St. John Paul II’s pitching ace Jackie Smith allowed 10 runs but only four were earned en route to her Cape-leading 5-0 record on the hill. She allowed 10 hits and struck out six. Smith was a key component of the Lady Lions’ hitting attack as well, as the senior co-captain went 3-5 with four runs scored.

Sandwich High’s Kylie Condosta, 8th grader Rahne Turley, junior captain Helen Colwell and Katelyn Spinella all had multiple hits for the Blue Knights. Condosta went 2-4 with a double, Colwell went 2-3 with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning and Spinella went 2-4 with a pair of basehits.

The Blue Knights scored twice in the first inning, but St. John Paul II retaliated quickly to tie it up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning on hits by Tate and Doyle. Smith allowed two runs to come across in the second but her teammates erupted at the plate against Turley for five runs to make it 7-4, Lions.

Both pitchers settled in the third frame, and Smith held Sandwich scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, but in the bottom half of the stanza, the Lions erupted once more for five runs and a 12-4 lead.

The Blue Knights chipped away at the lead with one in the fifth and five more in the sixth, but two key insurance runs in the fifth on a leadoff hit from Smith, an ensuing triple from Tate and singles from Sam Carlowicz and Doyle wrapped it up.

Smith delivered a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to take home her fifth win of the campaign.

The Lions hit the road Wednesday (April 15) to face the Nauset Warriors in North Eastham.

The Blue Knights welcome Marshfield on Wednesday in an all-important Atlantic Coast League tilt.
