Annual Chatham Fire Department plunge raises money for Watson family

CHATHAM – Dozens of swimmers braved the icy water Sunday to take part in the 10th Annual April Fools’ Day Plunge at Hardings Beach in Chatham.

All money raised from the event, hosted by the Chatham Fire Department, will go to help 27 year old Harwich resident Ryan Watson, who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Watson is currently  being treated at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital and is  unable to work his regular job with the Cape Cod Mosquito Control.

Over $100,000 has been raised over the years for local families in need from the annual event.

The plunge began in 2008 by Girad Smith whose father-in-law passed from cancer.

It started years ago with just 8 Chatham firemen. It always takes place on April 1, but was moved to Sunday because of the wind and rain on Saturday.
