HYANNIS – Four people escaped serious injury Sunday afternoon when a small plane went off the runway at the Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, crashed through a gate, and into a rental car parking lot.

Assistant Airport Manager Katie Servis said the Cirrus single engine plane was landing on runway 3-3 just after 1 p.m. when it lost control.

One of the landing wheels dipped into the grass and the plane skidded across the taxiway and through the fence.

At least four rental cars were damaged.

“Besides the pilot, there were three passengers on board. All passengers and the pilot went to Cape Cod Hospital. None appeared to have critical injuries that I know of at this point in time,” said Servis

Servis said the plane may have lost 20 to 30 gallons of fuel in the crash. Officials from the state Department of Environmental Protection were on scene to evaluate the impact. The airport fire department put down material to lessen the chance of the fuel catching on fire or spreading.

That aircraft, a Cirrus SR-22 has a ballistic parachute that is controlled by the pilot. While it was not deployed, Servis said it had to be secured before the plane could be moved.

“Before we move the aircraft, we have to make sure the parachute is secure and safe for our crew to move the aircraft,” said Servis.

According to federal aviation records, the plane was manufactured in 2004 and is registered to an address on Sea Meadow Circle in Centerville.

The names of the pilot and passengers have not been released.

Servis said the airport was closed for a short time after the crash. One runway was re-opened a short time later. Runway 3-3 remained closed early Sunday night while the investigation was ongoing.

State and federal aviation officials, along with local police, were taking part in the investigation.

On Monday at a briefing, Airport officials identified the pilot at Dr. Basia McAnaw. The passengers were not identified, but officials did reveal the plane landed and was trying to take off again when the accident occurred. The airport also revealed there is surveillance video of the crash but the NTSB has asked them to hold it pending the investigation.
