NOAA Extends Right Whale Speed Restrictions South of Vineyard

MARTHA’S VINEYARD – NOAA Fisheries has announced that voluntary vessel speed restrictions will remain in effect in the waters south of Martha’s Vineyard to protect endangered right whales.

14 right whales were spotted in the area this past week, leading to an extension of the slow-down request until March 21st.

Mariners are asked to keep their speed at 10 knots or less. The speed restriction zone coverage 16 nautical miles south of the island.

Officials have also issued a reminder about the Race Point Seasonal Management Area speed restriction, which is in effect until April 30th
