Summertime Beach Dog Restrictions Put In Place in Orleans

Dog BeachORLEANS – New summertime restrictions are in place for dog owners in Orleans.

In an attempt to standardize varying rules on different town beaches, the town will not allow dogs on beaches from April 1 to Labor Day, with the exception the off-road beach to the south near the Chatham town line where leashed dogs will be allowed.

“What we’ve done is we’ve been a little more restrictive in the springtime when the [piping plovers] are showing up, but we’ve opened up the fall for the dogs on the beaches,” said Orleans Natural Resources Manager Nate Sears. “In the past we’ve had three or four different dates for dogs and it’s been confusing for the employees of the town, the staff, as well for the beachgoers to remember the dates,” Sears added.

Sears said he hasn’t heard too much pushback on the new policy.
