Town Officials Want Parking a Priority for Chatham Bars Inn Warehouse Proposal

Chatham Bars Inn

CHATHAM – A new proposal by the Chatham Bars Inn to use the former bowling alley property on Chatham Bars Avenue for storage and maintenance is drawing concerns from town officials.

During the summer, the roadway is lined with vehicles and the town wants to make sure that parking spaces aren’t lost under the new proposal.

The Inn and neighbors have agreed to a deal that would have the inn moving the fence away from the road and planting trees in front of it.

Chatham Deputy Police Chief John Cauble said that the area is a safety issue.

“The road is narrow and the shoulders are limited for parking,” said Cauble. “There’s a stretch of roadway from Shore Road to Bay Lane that becomes restricted down to about one lane of travel.”

The move could create more space for cars as the trees and fence would be further away that it is currently.

Charles Baldwin, a Chatham resident since 1936, said that he has seen the issues on Chatham Bars Avenue get worse over the last couple of years.

“It is a very, very busy street for cars and trucks, they can’t go down Main Street so they go up Chatham Bars Avenue and back down Chatham Bars Avenue,” said Baldwin.

The building will contain an office and a workshop and there will be three employees working inside, with boats stored outside.
