Fabio Fognini of Italy lost $3,000 from a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct for an earlier match, then lost a heartbreaker on court, too, beaten 6-0, 4-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 by 11th-seeded David Ferrer of Spain in the second round.

Ferrer’s nearly 3 1/2-hour comeback victory began Thursday night and finished shortly before 1 a.m. Friday on Court 13. He improved to 10-0 against Fognini.

Fognini, the husband of 2015 U.S. Open women’s champion Flavia Pennetta, was docked prize money for unsportsmanlike conduct in his first-round victory. Against 2013 French Open runner-up Ferrer, Fognini got a time violation warning early in the fifth set, then was cited for unsportsmanlike conduct for throwing his racket later.

Ferrer was a U.S. Open semifinalist in 2007 and 2012.

Comments

  1. Ferrer gets no respect. He plays his heart out every time he is on the court but he gets no attention. He is seeded #11 in the Open but the commentators and the press talk about everyone but him. This article is not about Ferrer winning it’s about a lower seated player loosing and being fined. I feel sorry for Ferrer. He deserves much more.
