PLYMOUTH – A major freshwater wetlands restoration project in Plymouth is in line for some state funding.
The Baker Administration has allocated $50,000 for the Tidmarsh Farms restoration project in Manomet, which aims to restore 250 wetland acres and 3 and a half miles of stream in the Beaver Dam Brook watershed. It is the largest freshwater wetland restoration effort to date in Massachusetts.
“The Tidmarsh Farms restoration project will have tremendous value to the wildlife in the region and offer many recreational opportunities for people who enjoy the outdoors,” said Gov. Charlie Baker. “This project is a model for how to transform retired cranberry bogs into self-sustaining natural wetlands, using land conservation and ecological restoration.”
“Restoring and protecting the coastal wetlands of Massachusetts is incredibly important to safeguarding the well-being of our environment,” said Plymouth-Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo (R-Plymouth).
The restoration effort has been underway since October 2015 when $2.7 million was granted from two federal agencies.
Officials say the project will allow the area to develop into a salt marsh over the course of the next few decades with rising sea levels.
