With the winter season flying by, storms and all, it makes sense that the best of the best athletes begin rising to the top and rising to the occasion. Last Wednesday night for the first time in two years, the Bourne Canalmen defeated archrival Old Rochester, 3-1, and much of that victory was owed to junior goaltender Jack LaCasse. LaCasse turned in arguably the best performance of his still young career, deflecting 11 shots in the opening period and a total of 31 when the ice chips quit flying. For a pair of Falmouth athletes — a sophomore wing from the Falmouth Clippers and a freshman point guard from Falmouth Academy — their performances were equally as brilliant. Falmouth High’s Patrick Coyne dumped in a pair of second period goals for his Atlantic Coast League top dawgs and added a pair of assists in the third frame to pace the Clippers to a 6-1 win on the road versus D-Y. While Coyne was busy pouring it on in South Dennis Saturday night, Falmouth Academy’s Kendall Currence, a mere freshman, dumped in half of her team’s 46 points on the road against a tough Middleboro squad, once again leading the Mariners to victory. For their efforts, Currence, Coyne and LaCasse are this week’s Capecod.com Athletes of the Week.
