BOURNE – Twenty-eight men and women began their journey into corrections this week as the newest recruit class at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.
“Corrections is one of the toughest jobs in law enforcement,” says Sheriff James Cummings. “And it may also be the least appreciated.”
The eleven week academy will include a mix of classroom instruction, fitness training, and hands-on skills development. All recruits will learn the principles of inmate supervision and all the collateral duties, including report writing, suicidal prevention, self-defense, first aid, fire safety, gang identification and the relevant legal and professional standards.
Two thirds of the recruits reside on Cape Cape, with one to three new recruits from Bourne, Barnstable, Dennis, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Sandwich, and Yarmouth.
“Over the next eleven weeks these men and women will be pushed to the limits of their abilities to ensure they are prepared to become a sworn correctional officer. The training is difficult – because the job is difficult.” commented Special Sheriff Jeff Perry.
