YARMOUTH – From Yarmouth DNR: Over the course of the day Saturday, Yarmouth DNR patrol boats responded to multiple emergencies and several good intent calls for vessels disabled or in distress.
Strong winds and rough seas were to blame for many of the calls.
A few notable calls:
At approximately 11:30 AM, Yarmouth DNR Patrol Boat J48 along with Barnstable Harbormaster responded to a catamaran that had snapped its mast due to strong winds with two persons on board. The sailing vessel was drifting in the navigation channel of Hyannis creating a hazard for incoming and outgoing ferries.
Yarmouth and Barnstable were able to safely assist the vessel out of the channel and escort them to an area where they could make repairs.
At approximately 2:15 AM, Yarmouth DNR patrol Boat J48 was notified of a capsized sailing vessel with people in the water some without life jackets on. J48 quickly responded and arrived on scene within 30 seconds. With the help of a Good Samaritan all persons were retrieved from the water. The capsized sailboat was brought into safe waters where it was righted and de-watered. All persons were checked and declined medical treatment.
At approximately 3:15 PM, a concerned boater notified Yarmouth DNR Patrol Boat J47 of a medical incident involving a child and a fishing hook. The child received a fishing hook to his hand and was unable to free the line which was wrapped around a buoy. J47 responded along with Yarmouth Fire. The boy was successfully removed from the water where a waiting ambulance took him to the hospital.
