Coast Guard releases video of Chatham Bar rescue

BOSTON— The Coast Guard and local agencies rescued a male boater on Tuesday after his boat capsized outside the Chatham Bar.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a radio transmission from the Chatham Harbormaster who was responding to a capsized 20-foot runabout boat at about 4 p.m.

Searching the area, the Harbormaster discovered a lone man on a sandbar, but was unable to reach him due to shallow depths. Coordinating with Coast Guard watchstanders, it was determined that a helicopter would hoist the man to safety.

A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter returning to Air Station Cape Cod from a training mission, diverted to the scene. The aircrew hoisted the man and brought him back to Air Station Cape Cod.

“There was an outstanding mutual response by both the Chatham Harbormaster and Coast Guard units working together to rescue this man,” said Lt. Jarrod Pomajzl from Sector Southeastern New England.

He said the Chatham Bar can be an unforgiving danger in our area and mariner are reminded to use extreme caution in the area.

Because the boat is still adrift, the Coast Guard is issuing a marine bulletin to warn mariners of the navigation hazard.
