From the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: A small late-night fire in the kitchen of the Barnstable County Correctional Facility caused no injuries or damages.

At 11:30 PM, on October 21, a correctional officer entered the kitchen as part of his regular duties and discovered smoke filling the kitchen area. He identified a pile of rags smoldering on a metal cart by the office in the kitchen. He used a fire extinguisher on the rags, while another officer called the fire department. The Bourne Fire Department and Joint Base Cape Cod Fire Department responded within minutes.

After the firefighters ensured that the source of the fire was extinguished, and no other fire threat existed, the firefighters cleared the building.

The kitchen remains open and operational. Barnstable County Sheriff Donna Buckley thanks the staff for their fast action, and the Bourne Fire and Joint Base Cape Cod Fire departments for their quick response.

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office is working with authorities to determine the cause of the fire.
