Hyannis sinkhole caused by water main break swallows up van

HYANNIS – An overnight water main break Tuesday in Hyannis lead to a sinkhole that swallowed up a newspaper delivery van.

Barnstable Police Sgt. Jason Sturgis said the van was turning into Dumont Dr. when it went nose down into the hole.

At the time, water department workers were looking for the water main break after scattered reports of customers losing water pressure and service around Hyannis.

The police department also lost water service.

The operator of the van was not injured and repairs were being made to the water system. It appears a failure at a pumping station caused the break.

Main St. near the West End rotary was expected to be closed into the early morning hours are repairs were being made.
