Nantucket Police launch Security Camera Registration Program

NANTUCKET
From Nantucket Police: The Nantucket Police Department Security Camera Registration program is a voluntary program for residents and business owners to register their address as a location that operates a video surveillance system. This registry allows police officers to readily identify known locations throughout the island that have surveillance systems that could potentially aid police with criminal investigations.

Registering with the program dies not allow access for police to watch or monitor your surveillance system. The program is simply a registry to let us know you have a video surveillance system.

Registering your camera not only helps deter crime, but assists the department in its overall crime prevention on teh island. Security camera registration allows officers to quickly identify a location that may have video footage related to their case.

How does the registration program work? When a crime occurs, a police officer would contact the resident or business not only to determine if someone witnessed the incident, but to determine if anything was captured on video. Many times, when a crime occurs. the officer will go door-to-door in the area near the incident to find out of residents or businesses have a surveillance system that mayhave captured anything related to the case on video. In these instances, officers do not always know who has video surveillance and residents don’t always know about a crime captured on video by their surveillance system. Participation in the program is cost-free and confidential. You can opt-out of the program at any time by contacgting Detective Chris Kelly at the information listed below.

You will only be contacted by the Nantucket Police Department in the event that there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of your security camera. A police officer would ask registration participants to check their surveillance system for a specific date and time for video that may show activity involved with a crime, such as a getaway car or the direction that a person of interest traveled. The officer then, if necessary, may request a copy of any video captured by your camera. which may assist in the investigation of a crime.

Registration is simple and only takes about 10 minutes to complete the steps. You will provide basic information and tell us where your cameras are located. There is no cost associated with registration and your information is confidential.
