MASHPEE
– The Quashnet School was evacuated after a gas leak in the building for the second morning in a row. No injuries were reported. Officials decided to close the building for the day and send students home. A faulty boiler was blamed for a leak yesterday that sent two workers to the hospital for evaluation.

Statement from Quashnet School Principal: Dear Quashnet School Families,

I want to thank you for your cooperation and understanding the last two days as we deal with a building emergency at Quashnet.  Both yesterday and today we were faced with the need to remove students and staff quickly from the building in the safest possible way. Please know that the safety of your child is our top priority and that will be our primary concern. I know this situation has presented families with many challenges, but in an emergency situation we need to be flexible.

Last night, we did receive an all clear on the building. When I arrived at 6:30 AM today, the building had already been checked and the air quality was fine. Just prior to student arrival, that changed.  Please know that repairs are being conducted currently on our boiler system and problems are being resolved. You will hear from Superintendent DeBoer later today to confirm the status of school

Due to this situation, the pasta supper event for tomorrow night (Dec. 13th) at Quashnet will be rescheduled to a later date.

I am grateful for the help from Mashpee Fire Department, Mashpee Police, both the staff at KCC and MMHS for welcoming us, the bus company for being available at a moments notice, DPW, Adventure Club, the Boys & Girls Club for opening early both days to help accommodate our students, and to so many famililes who supported each other. The Quashnet staff was amazing in their calm supportive approach with children to continually maintain a safe environment. They rode buses, assisted at the Boys and Girls Club, served lunches, supervised students at both KCC and MMHS, assisted students in calling families, as well as entertained and calmed students. It is evident that we are a supportive and connected community.

With sincere appreciation,

MaryKate O’Brien, Principal
