Shawn Hesse

Emergency on Route 6! A motor vehicle accident and roll over of a work van with passengers still inside.  Fortunately off duty Emergency Medical Technician Shawn Hesse was in the area and immediately started to help.

Shawn crawled into the front of the work van through piles of roofing supplies, roofing tools and equipment and tangled metal with gasoline filling the inside of the vehicle.  As the Sandwich Fire Department arrived on scene Shawn relayed vital information on the condition of the two critically injured occupants who were trapped in the crushed passenger compartment.

EMT Hesse remained cool, calm and professional while controlling bleeding and maintaining an airway for one of the unconscious men. He located the second man who was trapped deep down towards the bottom of the crushed compartment.

Shawn stayed with the two men until the “Jaws of Life” successfully extricated them and the Med Flight helicopter transported them to the hospital. Shawn displayed outstanding bravery, courage and heroism by placing the victim’s welfare, safety and survival before his own.
