BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Community College President John Cox recently gave an address at a joint meeting between the Mass. Board of Higher Education and the Mass Board of Elementary and Secondary Education that focused on the school’s mission.
As chairman of the Mass. Community College Council of Presidents, Cox laid out the state of community college priorities and recent developments during the meeting.
Those priorities include increased efforts to fund the collective bargaining agreement and other budgets. He also encouraged private giving through a state matching incentives.
“We’re all challenged by the issue of the collective bargaining agreement, but we’re also all seeing slight dips in enrollment,” he said. “The economy is improving, and people have other options now.”
Cox noted that the Council strongly supports restoring the state’s $10 million Endowment Match Program. Currently, donations are deductible only through the Internal Revenue Code, but Cox argued restoring the program would leverage the commonwealth’s investment in public higher education.
Developments at the campus include a new cybertechnologist program which will teach students how to find vulnerabilities in networks.
The “ethical hacking” program will prepare students for what Cox described as a market ready to “explode” by 1.5 million jobs in 2019.
