CHATHAM – The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is pushing hard to see white shark license plates on the roads of Massachusetts.
The conservancy has launched a campaign that will let residents choose special shark-themed license plates, with proceeds helping support local shark research.
The design, which features a great white shark, two striped bass and a bluefish, was created exclusively for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.
The plate will go into production once 750 pre-orders have been reached.
So far the group is only 200 applications away from reaching their goal.
“Our young organization has been making a big impact by funding critical white shark research studies off the coast of Cape Cod and running an internationally recognized shark education initiative,” said Conservancy President Cynthia Wigren. “The license plates give Massachusetts residents a fun and significant way to show their support for shark research and education.”
Those interested in having the license plate must be a Massachusetts residents and pay a $40 special plate fee with a complete application to pre-order the plate.
The conservancy will receive $28 from that money, which is tax deductible.
“If the Conservancy can meet their goal and get these plates on the streets, then we will have a sustainable source of research funding for years to come,” said shark expert Dr. Greg Skomal, whose research is partly funded by the conservancy.
