Behavioral Health Summit to Focus on Childhood Trauma, Resilience

HYANNIS – The Behavioral Health Provide Coalition of Cape Cod and the Islands in collaboration with Cape Cod Healthcare will host the 7th annual Behavioral Health Summit Friday in Hyannis.

The summit is designed for individuals who provide care or support services across the behavioral health and primary care spectrum, including physicians, psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, administrators, peer advocates, first responders, public safety, teachers and other health professionals serving children and adults in the community.

“It’s very exciting and interesting bringing people in the community together and they get to see new programs that might be in the community,” said Diane Ofria, an APRN for Cape Cod Healthcare and co-chair of the Behavioral Health Provider Coalition.

The focus on this year’s summit is childhood trauma and resilience.

Allison Sampson-Jackson is the keynote speaker for this year’s event.

“She is actually going to be our closing speaker because she is very inspirational,” Ofria said.

Sampson-Jackson is an LCSW-certified Dare to Lead Facilitator and CEO of Integration Solutions, Inc. She will discuss both the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience in her presentation.

Sampson-Jackson has provided leadership development services via behavioral health, education, child welfare and criminal justice systems for more than 20 years.

Ofria said they will be talking about a study from the 1990’s which is becoming a focus of a lot of health agencies that finds children who have experienced trauma are more likely to develop health issues such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression and addictions.

“This summit is bringing together people in the community who are working with this everyday as well as people who are learning about it, and talking about ways that we can change, hopefully, the course of a lot of people’s lives,” Ofria said.

This year’s panel discussion is “Trauma Informed Community Building – Bridging the Gap,” which will feature Cape Cod Healthcare physicians Bart Main, MD, Psychiatrist; and Kate Rudman, MD, Pediatrician; Chief Frank Frederickson of the Yarmouth Police Department; Christina Caputo of the Cape Cod Collaborative; and Lyn Grace Rohr of Angel House/Housing Assistance Corporation.

The summit will also offer a platform for networking on top of the educational content.

Breakout sessions will also be held.

Reservations are $65 and include breakfast and lunch. Continuing education credits are available for MDs, RNs, SWs and LMHCs.

Registration is still open for the event. To register, visit http://conta.cc/31Zw1g6.

The Behavioral Health Provider Coalition, which is funded by the Cape Cod Foundation, is made up of 30 organizations, agencies, primary care providers and others serving the mental health needs of residents of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
