Big Brothers Big Sisters Renames ‘Bigs in Blue’ Program After Sean Gannon

Yarmouth Police officer Sean Gannon was shot and killed in the line of duty. End Of Watch 4/12/18 RIP

YARMOUTH – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands has officially renamed it’s Bigs in Blue Program in honor of the late Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon.

A ceremony honoring the name change was held at the Yarmouth Police Department on Thursday, where the nonprofit organization presented a plaque commemorating the dedication of the program.

Gannon was a Big Brother for over three years in the community-based mentoring program to a young man from Yarmouth, named Rylee. He was still an active mentor at the time of his death.

“Renaming the Big Brothers program in Sean’s name is maybe the best thing I’ve seen so far coming out of this as an honor because Sean was a big deal when it came to Big Brothers,” said Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson.

“What he did to be a Big Brother of a young man, despite the demands of police work, a marriage and family commitments and friends, to take to the time to be a Big Brother to a young man in need is outstanding. Most importantly, Sean was humble about it. He never really told anybody and did it because it was the right thing to do.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters sought the blessing of Gannon’s wife, Dara, and his parents, Patrick and Denise for the dedication.

The organization says it seeks to honor Gannon’s commitment to the community, his dedication to mentoring, and to keep his legacy sustained into the future.

“The honor of having the program named after him is so fitting. It brings a smile to my face and it’s just a wonderful feeling,” Frederickson said.
