BARNSTABLE – Bicycle enthusiasts along with public transit riders visited the Cape Cod Commission building in Barnstable Village yesterday for a commuter rally.

The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority co-sponsored the event with the Commission in an effort to improve alternative transportation in the region.

CCRTA Spokeswoman Lynn Ahlgren said they are changing some features on their buses for bicyclists.

“Typically we have two racks on our buses and we’re expanding those to be able to increase our capacity to hold some additional bikes on the buses so you can combine your commute using both the bus and the bike,” said Ahlgren.

Those that attended were given a number of bike-related giveaways, were shown how to put bikes on transit authority buses and also learned important bike safety tips.

Cape Cod Commission Technical Services Director Glenn Cannon said visitors have a lot of commuting options on the Cape.

“We want to make sure that people are aware of the CapeFlyer so that they can come here without their automobile, make sure they’re aware of the transit services that are available here, the routes that are available to make sure they know that they can load their bicycle on those transit services, just make sure people are aware they have alternatives while they’re down here,” said Cannon.
