Cape Cod Maritime Museum Announces The Lure and Lore of Marine Art

Maritime MuseumHYANNIS  – The Cape Cod Maritime Museum held a gala reception recently to celebrate the opening of their 2016 season.

Featured at the opening, was the new exhibit: The Lure and Lore of Marine Art, consisting of selected works from the collection and inventory of Dr. Edward and Mrs. Eleanor Dunn and their related businesses, New England Fine Art and Freeman’s Reach Fine Art.

The goal of the exhibition is not only to display a representative series of 19th and early 20th century marine paintings and discuss their artistic merit but also to point out their historical and geographical connections.

These are features that transform marine art from being just pretty paintings to also being important historical documents.

Items from the museum’s permanent collection including: scrimshaw, ship models and figureheads combine with this exhibit to provide the visitor an opportunity to experience the full scope of marine art.

Lightships of Cape Cod is an additional new exhibit for this season.

Created with the assistance of the Coast Guard Heritage Museum, this exhibit shows photos and models of the lightships, charts of their locations, points out their importance to navigation and tells the story of the development and craft of lightship baskets.

Other museum exhibits include: the Elizabeth and William Graham scrimshaw collection, the Cook boat shop, Boatbuilding on Cape Cod and the Preservation Boat Shed.
