Stock Up

Cotuit Kettleers (14-9 1st West)

The Kettleers took the title of hottest team on the Cape from the Firebirds reeling off 6 wins in a row including two over the weekend. Cotuit overcame some control issues by flexing their muscles at the plate. Griffin Conine and Luke Alexander both homered and a slew off Kettleers would add doubles as well to beat Bourne 7-4. Cotuit received excellent pitching performances on Sunday to stifle the Mariners 4-2. Falling as far as 3rd in the West, Cotuit has bounced back in a big way proving to be the class of the division.

Brewster Whitecaps (12-10-1 T2nd East)

Brewster has put together a 4 game win streak of their own to find themselves in a tie for 2nd with the Y-D Red Sox. Baseballs were flying everywhere on Saturday, Michael Gasper hit his 4th home run of the season and is now tied for the league lead in RBIs with 21. On Sunday, Brewster pitching orchestrated a 3 hit, 11 strikeout 1-0 shutout of the Falmouth Commodores. The Whitecaps have the most runs scored in the East division.

Orleans Firebirds (15-8 1st East)

The Firebirds torched the Chatham Anglers 8-2 on Sunday to halt a 2 game skid and maintain a commanding lead in the East. Romy Gonzalez went off, mashing 2 home runs en route to a 4 for 4, 4 RBI performance. With a consistent pitching staff and solid hitting up and down the lineup, the Firebirds are going to be a tough team to beat every night of the week.

Stock Stagnant

Bourne Braves (12-11 2nd West)

What to make of the Braves. They find ways to win games, but are primarily driven by the performance of their pitching as their hitting has yet to find its stride. They split the weekend with a loss to the red hot Kettleers and a convincing win over divisional rival Hyannis. The key takeaway for the Braves is that they are still 2nd place in the West and remain above .500.

Chatham Anglers (10-13 4th East)

The Anglers split the weekend as well with a big win over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Saturday, 9-5 but got trounced by the Firebirds on Sunday, 8-2. Chatham bashed 3 dingers on Saturday and DH Shea Langeliers knocked in 4 runs to increase his season total to 17. Pitching continues to be the Anglers’ achilles heel as they have yet to find consistent options to trot on the mound.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (12-10-1 T2nd East)

The middle of the Cape season has been trying for the defending champion Red Sox. They split the weekend, losing to Chatham Saturday and defeating Wareham in extras on Sunday. Brewster has drawn level with Y-D after a 4-6 10 game stretch. The Red Sox certainly have the talent to make a run at Orleans and as long as they remain in the playoff picture, the 4-peat remains in sight.

Stock Down

Falmouth Commodores (11-11-1 3rd West)

Falmouth played in one of the most entertaining games of the season against Wareham on Saturday. They rallied from 3 down in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings and again in the bottom of the 10th, but were unable to strike the deciding blow. Apparently gassed from the night before, Falmouth was unable to plate a run against Brewster on Sunday, losing 1-0. Similar to Chatham, Falmouth is going to go as far as their pitching is going to take them, so far this season the Commodores have surrendered 121 runs (3rd worst in the league).

Wareham Gatemen (10-12-1 4th West)

As exhilarating as Saturday’s game was for Falmouth it was equally as deflating for the Gatemen. The Gatemen lost in 12 innings to the Red Sox on Sunday making the total amount of innings played in two days 24. Justin Montgomery continues to dominate as he went 4 scoreless yesterday raising his total of scoreless innings pitched to 21. Wareham going into the weekend was arguably one of the hotter teams on the Cape, but going 0-1-1 will halt that momentum quickly.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks (9-13-1 5th West)

The Harbor Hawks led off the weekend with a win over the league leaders, Orleans Firebirds, 2-1. Hyannis utilized 5 pitchers to hold back the Firebirds. However, they followed up the win with a 8-3 defeat at home against Bourne. The West division remains tight, but the Harbor Hawks are in danger of fading into obscurity if they don’t turn things around soon.

Harwich Mariners (7-15-1 5th East)

Not a whole lot has gone right for the Mariners in 2017. After losing both games over the weekend Harwich has dropped 4 straight and have only won 2 in their last 10. Their run differential on the season is a putrid -30 with a league low 80 runs scored, which is 14 less than the next lowest.
