HYANNIS – Cape Cod Healthcare officials say the new planned tower at Cape Cod Hospital will enhance patient care in several key service areas.

The six-story, $180 million patient care tower will advance the health care system’s cardiac, cancer, intensive care, women’s health and medical surgery areas.

“We are really expecting this tower to enhance, improve and really elevate care on Cape Cod,” said Robin Lord, Cape Cod Healthcare’s director of communications.

The tower will become the new main entrance area for the hospital and will include 40 new cardiac and medical beds, new cancer facilities, expanded intensive care space, new patient welcoming and patient registration area, and educational space.

The project will also allow for future growth as the 5th floor will be finished at a later date.

The new Cape Cod Cancer Center will be located on levels one and two and will offer a complete continuum of care for local residents. There will be 36 chemotherapy treatment bays, which is an increase for 19 currently.

The center will also include dedicated registration and waiting areas, improved patient screening areas, a rooftop garden, and clinical staff education spaces to enhance the experience for patients, their family and staff.

The project also creates the opportunity to provide new clinical trials for cancer patients as part of the organization’s partnership with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

“This is an extraordinary investment in the future of health care on Cape Cod,” Lord said.

The project will also help CCHC with its goal of establishing a Level 3 trauma center.

Lord said CCHC officials are excited about the project.

“It will transform the look of the hospital, the care at the hospital,” she said. “It will have a brand new entrance and all new parking configuration.”

The new tower is expected to create 80 new jobs at the hospital, along with 250-300 construction jobs over three years.

The project includes an integrated electronic medical system. The medical record system will better support clinicians in coordinating care across multiple settings.

“It will make sure that any doctor you are seeing can see all of the providers you have, all the medications you are on and all of the tests you have had,” Lord said.

The system will also allow patients to access their records both from home and on mobile devices.

The system is expected to launch in November of 2020.

Infrastructure support work on the tower project is expected to begin in September.

“The actual work on the facility will begin after we have permits in hand, local and state permits, which we are pursuing now with the Cape Cod Commission and the Department of Public Health,” Lord said.

Actual construction on the building is expected to start either at the end of this year or early in 2020. The project has an expected completion date of spring 2022.

“It’s really a commitment by Cape Cod Healthcare into the community that we are here for the long-term,” Lord said. “Your healthcare is in good hands and will continue to be for years to come.”
