Center for Coastal Studies to Host Seminar on River Herring

Herring-560x314PROVINCETOWN – The Center for Coastal Studies spring lecture series continues on Wednesday March 30th with a presentation on the life history and ecology of the river herring in the Northeast.

For centuries, river herring have been important economically.

Due to dwindling numbers in its population, environmentalists have given much attention to the fish, especially with continuing efforts to restore the rivers, streams, lakes and ponds that are crucial for their reproduction and survival.

During the free event at Napi’s Restaurant in Provincetown which will begin at 7 p.m., Wheaton College Professor Dr. Barbara Brennessel will give an overview of the biology of the fish and describe the habitats at different stages of their life history.

Doctor Brennessel will also discuss the dramatic decline of river herring since the mid-twentieth century and the efforts to restore the herring populations that have treated generations of on-lookers during inland migrations during the spring.
