Climate Change Studies to be Presented in Chatham

CHATHAM – The Town of Chatham’s Department of Natural Resources will host a presentation Thursday on two inter-related climate change studies.

Mashpee-based Applied Coastal Research & Engineering will present findings from the Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management Coastal Resilience Grant “Prioritization Assessment for Coastal Resiliency and Adaptive Management along Chatham’s East-facing Shoreline,” and the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program planning grant.

Chatham completed the MCZM Coastal Resilience Grant which employed tidal, wave, and sediment transport models to quantitatively evaluate inlets and tidal channel dynamics within Chatham Harbor.

Results from the evaluation have been utilized to provide the community with prioritized assessments for developing coastal shore protection strategies along Chatham’s east-facing shoreline to help the town proactively plan for projects that improve resiliency over the next 20-30 years.

A draft report was also completed as part of the state’s MVP program. The report, which was developed by community stakeholders and Town staff, identifies hazards, develops strategies to improve resilience, and prioritizes actions to be implemented within the community to increase resilency to climate change.

The presentation is at Chatham Town Annex at 7 p.m. in the downstairs Large Meeting Room. It will also be broadcast live on Channel 18 (www.chatham-ma.gov/channel-18/pages/channel-18-live-stream) and will be available later for on-demand viewing.
