FALMOUTH – The future location for the Falmouth senior center is in up in the air as town officials have decided against purchasing the Coonamessett Inn.
This comes as a Proposition 2 ½ ballot question, which asks for the approval to fund the purchase of the property, is included on the warrant for the town’s special election on September 8.
Town officials said that the cost associated with turning the Inn into a senior center were too much.
“The seniors certainly deserve something and I thought this was an instant way of doing it for them versus waiting three or four years for one to be built,” said Coonamessett Inn owner Bill Zammer. “At no time did we have any problems with the discussions it was very friendly. I thought this was a place that might be of use to them.”
The Inn sits on four acres of land with a value of over $3.2 million.
Despite negotiations with the town falling through, Zammer said he has no intention of selling the Inn to anyone else.
“This is an asset we have, I mean if someone were to walk in with a pile of money that’s a whole different story, but we’re doing fine running the businesses and the staff are doing a great job so that we can continue,” said Zammer.
The town has spent years determining where to place the new senior center.
The current facility on Dillingham Avenue has been deemed too small.
Town officials have previously looked at land near Falmouth High School as a possible location but the cost to relocate the athletic field was too prohibitive.
