HYANNIS – A near-record crowd strolled along Main St. in Hyannis Sunday at the 24th Annual Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce Father’s Day Car Show.

Around 400 cars were on display in what has become one of the largest yearly car shows in New England.

Crowd estimates were in the range of 50-to-60 thousand people, encouraged by a sun-filled day and rows of classic cars.

This year’s collection of metal and muscle included vehicles from the 1920’s to present day, ranging from Model T Fords to high-performance hot rods.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Todd Deluca said the car show not only provides a direct economic impact with tens of thousands of visitors, but also showcases downtown to draw people back for a return visit.

One of this year’s sponsors was the Cape Cod Five.

First Vice-President Bert Talerman said they’re happy to be part of such a big community event.

“A great day for Main St. Hyannis, a great day for all the businesses here, great for the Cape, again just a positive event all around,” said Talerman.

As the summer tourist season begins to pick up as the school year finishes, Deluca said things are looking good for downtown Hyannis.

The chamber is getting ready to install the new visitor’s center at the head of the Village Green on the sidewalk.

“Visitors are going to have easy access to information so we can help people who are visiting Hyannis, educate them about what is going on and tings to do,” Deluca said.

Larry Horgan with Horgan Insurance, another co-sponsor of the show, said an event like the car show make a big difference in Hyannis.

“It does a lot for the community, brings people together. Just look at today, there’s 50 or 60 thousand people walking down Main St. Hyannis,” said Horgan.

Deluca said there are some new businesses along Main Street and others that have received face lifts over the winter.

“I think Main Street is looking great,” he said.
