HARWICH – The Big Fix is coming to Harwich.

Housing Assistance Corporation recently announced that the annual event will be held in Harwich in 2018. The Big Fix is an effort to help local homeowners who need assistance with small home repair projects.

“We do things like build handicap ramps, help people with projects where they weren’t able to finish the projects because of lack of funds or a contractor didn’t return,” said Laura Reckford, the Director of Community Relations and Fundraising for Housing Assistance Corporation.

“It can be a range of things from cleaning out gutters to projects that people just can’t do any more and they don’t have anyone to help them with them.”

Representatives from HAC recently met with Harwich selectmen to detail the event.

The annual day of service assembles over 300 volunteers who make small home improvements for income-eligible seniors, veterans and disabled homeowners.

The Harwich Big Fix is planned for next September. Each year, the Housing Assistance Corporation picks one town on Cape Cod to host the event in.

In 2017, the Big Fix was held in Falmouth. Barnstable hosted the first Big Fix event in 2010 and since then, it has been held in Sandwich, Dennis, Mashpee, Yarmouth, Bourne and in Brewster.

Housing Assistance Corporation will accept applications from homeowners who may need assistance and will choose 12 to 15 projects to take on.
