Harwich Garden Club Seeks to Enhance Backyard Habitats

HARWICH – The Harwich Garden Club is inviting property owners to sign on with the National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat Certification program to promote an effort to enhance backyard wildlife habitat.

The club hopes to educate local homeowners about how to create a backyard which supports wildlife and restores habitats.

The five criteria required for a backyard certification include providing a food source, a water source, places for cover, places to raise young and the use of sustainable gardening practices.

Many properties are already meeting these requirements.

The goal of the club is to have at least 175 homes and common areas certified in town to make Harwich the first Cape Cod community with a designation of a Community Wildlife Habitat.

The Harwich Select Board has endorsed the initiative.

To join the effort, visit www.nwf.org and click on “Get Involved” and then “Certify.”

There is a $20 cost to participate and certified home owners will receive a plaque.

Mail-in applications may also be found at Harwich Town Hall, Brooks Library, the Harwich Community Center and the Harwich Chamber of Commerce.
