High Winds Delay Return of Mass. Maritime Training Vessel

BUZZARDS BAY – Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadets on board the T.S. Kennedy are getting a couple of extra days at sea.

The ship’s planned arrival back in Buzzards Bay on Sunday was delayed because of strong winds and heavy seas.

Instead, it will stay at anchor in Cape Cod Bay until Tuesday, when it should arrive home at 3:30 p.m.

A High Wind Warning is in effect for Cape Cod through Monday night.

The yearly Sea Term is conducted between the two academic semesters at the Buzzards Bay school.

During the trip, cadets rotate through ship operations including deck and engine watches, classes and laboratory training at sea, and maintenance and emergency drills.

Ports of call this year included Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, Barbados and Miami.

The TS Kennedy has served as a classroom on the sea for thousands of students since its $10 dollar restoration back in 2009.

They departed from Cape Cod on January 12.
