Highland Light Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Move

KA_Truro_Winter_Highlands Lighthouse Muesum_35_121015TRURO – The first lighthouse on Cape Cod will celebrate a milestone today at 2 p.m.

Representatives from Eastern National and the Cape Cod National Seashore, which now operate the beacon, will be present to celebrate 20 years since the lighthouse was moved back from the eroding Truro cliffs.

It was commissioned by George Washington, was a waypoint for overseas travelers heading toward Boston, and was even visited by Henry David Thoreau.

But, according to National Seashore Superintendent George Price, its role has changed in recent years.

“As technology changes, the Coast Guard is moving forward with their mission,” he said. “But the lighthouses are obviously loved by the communities in which they are located, so they’re trying to make sure these historic sites are managed locally.”

That sense of community heritage is what prompted community members in Truro and the National Park Service to rally behind saving Highland Light, according to Price.

Nauset Light in Eastham was also moved around the same time, also due to community members coming together, Price said.

The celebration will feature a performance by the Highland Light Scottish Pipe Band and will feature Price, 4th Barnstable District State Representative Sarah Peake, Truro Selectman Maureen Burgess and more.

The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. at the lighthouse at 27 Highland Light Road, North Truro.
