Historic Murals Uncovered in Hyannis Will Be Preserved

mural2HYANNIS – Art murals painted by Cape Cod artist Vernon Coleman in 1930s that were uncovered last week at the site of a new Hyannis restaurant, will be preserved.

An expert in mural restoration who wished to remain anonymous, will assume the project.

Four of the seven historic murals will restored and frames will be created to encapsulate the paintings.

Plaques will also be placed near the murals, and will address the history of the art.

The preservation of the murals will be incorporated into the design of KKatie’s Burger Bar, which is expected to open by Memorial Day.

Local architect Mary-Ann Agresti helped form a community group that met with the owners of KKatie’s Burger Bar to develop a plan to preserve the paintings.

“I’ve been really advocating for us to maintain the authenticity of Hyannis through our cultural assets and I think is a really great example of one of them, so we didn’t want them to be just covered back up again,” said Agresti.

The three remaining murals will be removed and stored in a safe location until they can be restored and displayed.

Barnstable Town Manager Tom Lynch was pleased with the decision that the owners and the community group made to preserve the murals.

“It’s just a wonderful way that the community has come together to help preserve this historic part of Hyannis,” said Lynch.
